The MTG Community - Keys to Succeed in Magic and Life [Edward Eng - Battlemage, Level 41]
I've been doing pretty well lately and I feel even better results are ahead, especially this weekend at the TCG Championship in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Today, I'd like to talk about three key factors that have fueled my recent success.
1. Confidence
As I mentioned this in a previous article, this is one of the most important elements of life to master. It's also just important to remember that cockiness DOES NOT equal confidence.
The concept of confidence is quite simple. However, gaining confidence is even simpler. Confidence comes from one main source.
Experience
All you really need to do is get out there and try. My life quote is, "If you don't try, you've already failed." That right there tells you that you can't succeed if you don't try. Hence, the first step towards success is purely putting in effort.
Yes, you'll make tons of mistakes. But most people learn from their mistakes not their successes. That's how you get better. And that's how you gain confidence.
2. Game Plan
Once you've put it in your mind that you're willing to try. The next step to success is to have a game plan.
First, ask yourself a few questions.
What's my goal?
What's my timeline?
How will I achieve my goal?
What will I do after I achieve my goal?
The power of asking questions is amazing. But listening to the answers from others AND yourself to questions is even more powerful. And I mean REALLY listen. It takes a lot more skill than you might think to become a great listener. And becoming a great listener helps you build a strong game plan.
3. Focus
Once you have a game plan, it's time to focus. A lot of people including myself talk about execution. And yes, execution is critical to actually achieving goals. But focus is critical to effectively achieving those goals.
So there you have it. These are the three factors that have contributed to my success as of late and will fuel my success going forward, starting this weekend.

A Little Bit about Eddie
He started playing Magic around December of 1994 then hit the sanctioned competitive tournament scene in 1997. He played till about 2000 and was on the cusp of making the Pro Tour but stopped to focus on school. He found his old teammate on Facebook in 2009 and got back into the game in 2010. Since then he's played in two Nationals, top 16ed an SCG Invitational, and day 2ed multiple Grand Prix.
